How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?
An electric car like the new Subaru Solterra offers a ride that is more eco-friendly and, without the need for trips to Pasadena and Los Angeles gas stations, one that is more economical as well. If you’re new to the world of all-electric vehicles, it’s not uncommon to have some questions, chief among them, “How long does it take to charge an electric car?” While there’s no one standard answer to this question, as times vary depending on vehicle make and model, here is an overview of EV charging types and the general charging timetables of each.
Electric Car Charging Options
So, how long does it take to charge an electric car? That depends on which of the three charging options you choose. Each of these options and their electric car charging times are discussed below.
- Level 1 Charging:This method uses a standard domestic three-pronged grounded outlet of 110 or 120 volts. Although it has the slowest electric car charging times of the three available methods, Level 1 is ideal for topping off your charge when you have the time to do so. Typically, it takes about 24 hours or more to achieve a full charge.
- Level 2 Charging: Level 2 Charging requires a professionally-installed, brand-approved domestic charger. These chargers utilize more energy–usually 240 volts or more–to significantly speed up your electric car charging times. You can often get an 80% charge in four to 10 hours.
- Level 3: Also known as DC Fast Charging, Level 3 is only available at certain public charging stations. But it’s much faster than other options and can restore you to an 80% charge in as little as 30 minutes to one hour.
